(I can't stop loving you)
I've made up my mind
To live in memory of the lonesome times
(I can't stop wanting you)
It's useless to say
So I'll just live my life in dreams of yesterday
(Dreams of yesterday)
Those happy hours that we once knew
Tho' long ago, they still make me blue
They say that time heals a broken heart
But time has stood still since we've been apart
Yesterday I posted up a track from Sam & Ruby's album The Here and the Now, which prompted a reader to ask about another song they thought they had done that went something like "i cant stop missing you/ i've made up my mind." While not exactly right, the duo did do a song that went "i can't stop loving you/ i've made up my mind." The name of the song is quite appropriately I Can't Stop Loving You, and it's an old country song first written and performed by Don Gibson in 1957. In 1962, Ray Charles covered it on his groundbreaking album Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music. Since then, it's been covered by everyone under the sun. Here is a selective sampling of some of them; which is your favorite?
Sam & Ruby - I Can't Stop Loving You : Sony/ATV Nashville Classic Covers: Volume One
Don Gibson - I Can't Stop Loving You : RCA Country Legends: Don Gibson
Ray Charles - I Can't Stop Loving You : Complete Country & Western Recordings: 1959-1986 [Disc 1]
Ike and Tina Turner - I Can't Stop Loving You : Live! The Ike & Tina Turner Show
Frank Sinatra - I Can't Stop Loving You : It Might As Well Be Swing
Elvis Presley - I Can't Stop Loving You : Live in Las Vegas
Martina McBride - I Can't Stop Loving You : Timeless

I have always loved Brother Ray's version but after listening to Old Blue Eyes singing Quincy Jones' arrangement I now have two favorites.
Thanks! I figured it out once I got my motor skills back from a night of Margaritas! I have two songs on my ipod from Sam & Ruby. The other is "too much" and I kinda mixed the two together in my brain. I really love them. I also like the Frank and Elvis versions. I always like Martina, but it wasn't my favorite of the options.
Thanks for the post! That clears it up.
This wasn't supposed to be the love song I hope....
It sure was!
...But it is SAD... it is unreciprocated love so that is more like a heartbreak song (the damn lyrics even say "blue" and "broken heart") I said love song! This is a broken heart song! =p
You just said love song...and it's got the word love in the title.
hm, i think i disagree... this doesn't count!
love is love...the good and the bad
I see your point but that is a little like saying pain is pleasure. When pain is more like the antithesis of pleasure.
This is CLASSIC!!! You can feel this dude!!
Pleasure and pain, though directly opposite are contrived to be constant companions. - Pierre Charron
Okay. *That* I agree with.
