Checking in with Twilight Hotel

Highway Prayer, the follow-up to Twilight Hotel's critically acclaimed 2006 album Bethune, opens up with an INSANELY good track named Viva La Vinyl. Apart from the fact that I recently got my turntable hooked up to my computer and have been re-visiting some classic music and falling in love with vinyl again, this track just rocks in a 1950's Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two jamming at Sun Records sort of way. It's not surprising since they've brought Dave Roe on board (who played in Johnny's band starting in the early 90's).

Hailing from Winnipeg, the group is made up of a love-struck couple Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury (just like Hello, Blue Roses, who I wrote about yesterday coincidentally!). The pair makes wonderful harmonies together on tracks that range from the rockabilly opener, to the sea shanty feel of The Ballad of Salvador and Isabelle (listen below), to the Beirut inspired Shadow of a Man, and back to more countryish feeling tracks like Sometimes I Get a Little Lonely.

The album comes out January 29th in Canada; I'm not sure about a U.S. release date. You might have to order one from the other side of the border!
